What is
TCM acupuncture?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) acupuncture is an ancient therapeutic system rooted in the Taoist understanding that the body and mind are inseparable, with health arising from their balance and harmony.

Over thousands of years, this system evolved through careful observation of how health and disease repeatedly manifested in the human body. Rather than focusing solely on one symptom, early practitioners studied how symptoms often clustered together to form patterns of function and dysfunction, developing a framework for understanding how changes in the body’s internal balance influenced physical and emotional wellbeing.

They observed a network of interconnected pathways, known as meridians, through which Qi (vital energy), blood, and body fluids were believed to circulate. They found that stimulating specific points along these pathways could influence pain, movement, organ function, and other areas of the body, often far from the site of treatment. Over generations, these observations were refined into a sophisticated and systematic medical model that continues to be taught and practised today.

How can acupuncture help?

While the traditional concepts of meridians and Qi differ from modern anatomical models, scientific research is increasingly uncovering biological mechanisms that may explain many of acupuncture’s therapeutic effects. Studies suggest acupuncture can influence the nervous system, connective tissue, blood flow, immune function, inflammatory processes, and the body’s own pain-modulating pathways.

Points can be chosen to support different outcomes such as to reduce swelling, bruising, inflammation and pain. Promote blood flow, relax spasms, stimulate lymphatic function, regulate immune response and some hormonal processes. Or encourage the production of calming and regulating neuropeptides.

We see many conditions in the clinic including pain patterns, IFV and fertility (along side women’s and men’s health), neurological, gut and mental health conditions where traditional acupuncture is used to support and improve peoples experience.

As evidence continues to grow, confidence is increasing that this ancient form of healthcare has a valuable role alongside modern medicine.
