Acupuncture is generally considered safe when received by a registered experienced Chinese medicine trained acupuncturist.
As there is the insertion of needles into the body there are risks involved, these include pain, bruising, and bleeding locally.
When you seek a registered trained acupuncturist they will have undertaken 400 clinical hours of supervised training in needling practice that can later become thousands of hours of practice when adding on years of experience.

Generally, acupuncture is reported by people to be a very comfortable relaxing experience.
If there is discomfort reported during treatments the sensations that are most commonly experienced are
Dull (mild/moderate) aching at the point
Pressure at the point
Numbness at the point
A strange but not unpleasant sensation at the point
These sensations tend to pass in a few minutes after needle insertion.
If any pain occurs during treatment the acupuncturist will respond to your feelings of the pain and mitigate it if there is any displeasure or concern.
The initial session may be little longer than the following sessions due to the initial interviewing process and ranges between 60 to 70 minutes (60 mins for ACC bookings).
Following treatment sessions are 60 minutes. The acupuncture in all sessions will range from between 20 to 50 minutes depending on what you need.
Short 30 minute appointments are available, the booking of these is at the discretion of the acupuncturist of the patients needs.
If it is your first time for acupuncture you will be well looked after to ensure a feeling of safety and comfort duration the time you are in our care. For a more in-depth idea of what a session is like take a look here.
Acupuncture works to regulate the bodies own healthy functional processes. The acupuncture response is interrelated to self-modulating (self-healing) functions which are closely linked to on an individuals overall wellbeing and ability self regulate, this in-turn causes variable response rates and times.
It is often said that conditions that have been present for a long time, will require a longer course of treatment. Research around acupunctures benefits is when a course of treatment is taken, and can be between 6-12 (or more) treatments. This is similar to other manual therapies requiring repetition of treatment to bring about a consistent effect. During the course of treatment your symptoms related to the condition being treated, and other symptoms that reflect the healing potential of the body, will be monitored to assess what benefits may be occurring. Ongoing reflection of the effectiveness of treatment will be drawn from these changes.
Acupuncture is used globally by a vast number of primary care and allopathic practitioners, including medical doctors, physio therapists and chiropractors. It is endorsed my numerous health foundations world wide, all with a strong interest in helping others to improve their health and quality of life.
The evidence acupunctures biological plausibility and its efficacy for some conditions is unclear but ongoing, studies where there is evidence for effect are generally limited to some specific conditions, take a look at our blog for more detail on these.
