Cupping Therapy

Supporting your whole body wellness through cupping therapy in Christchurch.

Supporting your whole body wellness

Cupping therapy is a treatment that can help support soft tissue injury rehabilitation, strongly promote relaxation and stress reduction, improve micro-circulation and encourage blood flow of the body’s internal systems, and trigger a protective immune response.

Cupping can create a dark circular mark. These marks may look similar to a bruise but as cupping marks do not occur from contusion trauma to the tissue they are not bruises. In a bruise capillaries are ruptured, causing the blood to bleed out. Comparatively with cupping the blood is drawn out of the microvessels. If cupping marks do occur, they are not usually painful, and are resolved by the body after around 3-5 days.

What is Cupping?

Cupping is a treatment, created by the application of a vacuum or negative pressure to skin, fascia, and muscles. The vacuum is created by warming the air inside the cups with fire. The cups are applied to the body, strongly drawing and pulling the fascia and superficial muscle layers into the cup.

Different styles of cupping

Sliding or moving cupping

Sliding or moving cupping is a method that strongly breaks up adhesions and moves blood for old injuries, strong pain, and clearing the area of “stagnations”. It is a vigorous form of treatment for people with strong constitutions and good energy levels. It is used for pain relief, to upregulate immune factors, and reduce chronic inflammation.

Stationary cupping

A cupping style of placing the cups and leaving for around 5 minutes. This is the most common form of cupping as it is well suited to most people. It is used for stress relief, to assist with cold and flu symptoms, paresthesia, pain, and injury.

Flash cupping

Flash cupping is used to increase blood flow, vitality, and energy in the area. It is performed by rapidly applying and removing the cups for a few minutes before leaving them stationary. Flash cupping is thought to build strength, invigorate the musculature (qi and blood flow), and be supportive of low-energy individuals.

"11/10 would recommend. I went to see Elly for an issue with my knee and not only has she helped immensely with that but she has really helped me out in other aspects as well. You can really feel that she cares about her clients and the work she is doing which i believe makes such a difference in the treatment itself. I always leave feeling great and my knee has gotten so much better."
