How does Chinese medicine understand neurological conditions?

In Chinese medicine, neurological symptoms are understood in relation to the overall health of the body and how the body is adapting to its environment.
The acupuncturist first assesses the strength of a person’s Qi and Blood. In modern terms, these concepts can loosely relate to the body’s vitality, nervous system, immune function, and hormonal balance. Attention is given to factors such as diet, stress levels, sleep quality, digestion, energy, and other aspects of health that may influence recovery and nervous system function.
The second area of assessment focuses on environmental and lifestyle factors. This may include the type of work performed, exposure to cold or air conditioning, physical strain, seasonal changes, emotional stress, and other daily influences that may place stress on the nervous system.
By understanding both the internal health of the body and the external factors affecting it, Chinese medicine aims to identify why the body became vulnerable to the condition and how acupuncture and the meridian system may be used to support recovery and restore balance.

What are some symptoms and conditions we see in clinic?

What is the evidence?

This meta-analysis from 2024 looks at 21 studies of over 2,121 patients and compared to the control group find that acupuncture could significantly improve neuropathic pain intensity.

Acupuncture is cumulative, treatment and outcomes build over time.
