How Acupuncture and
dry-needling treatments support ACC injury?

Acupuncture and dry needling combined are a great strategy to support recovery from injury.

Together they encourage the release of healing proteins and immune factors helping damaged tissue repair more efficiently. They improve blood and lymphatic circulation, reduce pain by calming nerve activity, and regulate chronic inflammation and swelling by modulating immune responce.

Treating myofascial trigger points and motor points improves muscle function to support recovery. Dry needling specifically works to restore normal muscle tone. Muscles that are too tight or long have reduced strength, endurance, proprioceptive awareness and limited range of motion, they also are at higher risk further injury.

Acupuncture promotes the release of endorphins and neuropeptides in the central and peripheral nervous system that manage pain and create a noticeable sense of relaxation during and after treatment. Acupuncture also is found to assist in managing whole body inflammation via the vagus innflimation reflex.

What therapies are used in an ACC treatment?

What do I need to know to book an ACC treatment?

  • An approved claim: A GP or physiotherapist must submit a claim to Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC). Once approved by ACC a letter is sent to you confirming treatment will be covered.
  • Claim details: An ACC45 number or claim number is required before the appointment.
These are included in the approval letter. If unavailable, they can be obtained by calling ACC on 0800 101 996.
  • Timing of the injury: For acupuncture, the injury must usually have happened within the last 12 months.
After this period, treatment is not typically covered unless the injury is severe (e.g. permanent disability).
  • Pre-appointment form: After booking, a short form with questions about the injury is emailed from us. This must be completed and returned before the appointment date.
  • Important treatment limits: ACC funds up to 12 acupuncture treatments
These must be used within 12 months of accident date.
All treatments must be completed within 3 months after the first acupuncture session has been taken.
Any unused treatments after 3 months are no longer covered, regardless of the provider used for the first session.
For clarification, contact ACC or the treatment provider directly.
