For thousands of years women have been using a variety of self-care secrets to manage or treat pain and other issues associated with menstruation, naturally regulate their cycle to promote pregnancy, and later heal from childbirth.
Here we reveal in succession, six self-care Traditional Chinese Medicine and East-Asian folk practices that may assist women in modern times.
We offer these empirical methods to broaden your knowledge and to stock your tool kit in living your life as a woman. We recognise their value in natural health, because of their time-tested and health-promoting reputation, traversing centuries through lineages of healers. We recognise also that some methods have not yet gained strong evidence, however, we welcome you to reach further into them if they resonate with you, and most importantly experience them for yourself at home.
Women’s Secret #2 is MEDITATION (aka mindfulness).
Meditation is now well documented for its benefits in different health concerns.
It is a great way to care for your mental-emotional wellbeing and promote loving relationships, but also has direct effects on your physiology as a woman.
Regular meditation has been found to manage period pain, reduce PMS symptoms, down-regulate inflammation, regulate immune function and promote gut health, just to name a few benefits.
Many women say meditation isn’t for them, the reason being they cannot concentrate or they fall asleep. This might be the point missed, and could be like saying, “I won’t practice riding a bike because sometimes I fall off”. One important aspect of meditation is the space we are providing to notice ourselves. Distraction thoughts, feelings of a buzzing mind, or uncomfortable sensations in the chest are enough to be helpful when they are simply noticed. Often we are not aware of these experiences of ourselves until we stop and be still. In this way, meditation is not only beneficial in its outcome, but it is also beneficial through its process and self-engagement.
There is no failing in sitting still.
Here is a Yoga Nidra (body scan) meditation you can try at home. If you don’t like it, that’s okay, search for one that you enjoy. Some people prefer music, others need an accent that won’t distract them. There are also many great meditation groups out there, often group meditation brings a phenomenon of a more powerful, easier to drop into experience.
For best results do it daily, for some results, do it!
